Bus Tour Information:
“Founding Fathers: Essentially Important for Independence—Ferry Farm, Stratford Hall and Menokin”
This year’s bus tour will depart from previous years’ battlefield-centered tours. In 2025 we want to use the “power of place” to understand the origins of the American Revolution by visiting the homes and hearths of men who were significantly important to our fight for independence. Our tour guide is a renown Washington scholar and has been writing a new biography of “Light Horse Harry” Lee. We will visit Washington’s boyhood home, Ferry Farm on the Rappahannock River; Stratford Hall where Richard Henry Lee and Harry Lee lived; and Menokin, built by Francis Lightfoot Lee. This latter home is extremely unique because it was rescued from ruin when an enterprising group of folks saved it by building a glass structure around the decaying mansion. It is unquestionably unique, especially if you have never seen it. Our tour will be full of narration, interpretation and analysis by Ed Lengel and onsite staff, so you’ll come away with a better understanding of the decisions made by men who pledged their life, fortune and sacred honor for the “Glorious Cause.” Don’t miss this one.
What’s included: Bus coach transportation, all admissions, lunch, beverage and snack breaks, all gratuities, and the services of an experienced tour leader. Tour goes out rain or shine. There is some walking, so wear comfortable shoes. Please see our policy page for information about cancellations.
Our Tour Leader: Edward G. Lengel is an award-winning historian and educator. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, where he directed the Washington Papers Project for many years, and subsequently worked in senior positions in the public history field. These include the official history of Colonial Williamsburg; General George Washington: A Military Life; To Conquer Hell: The Meuse-Argonne, 1918; and Never in Finer Company: The Men of the Great War’s Lost Battalion.
